Back in 2016, I started a Chavacano guide on my Facebook page (follow here: http://www.facebook.com/busyqueenphils ) where I introduced the vocabulary and taught my followers how to speak in this beautiful dialect.
Chavacano, also referred to as Chabacano, is a Spanish creole language spoken in Zamboanga City, Southern Philippines. It is also influenced by dialects of other regional groups like Cebuanos, Ilonggos, Tausug, Tagalog among others.
Being a native Chavacano speaker, born and raised in Zamboanga City, I observed that the younger generation nowadays don’t speak the dialect as much as we did back then. There’s nothing wrong about being fluent in other languages. However, it would be so sad if Chavacano will slowly be forgotten just because it is not being used that often anymore.
As a little contribution , I relaunched this guide in a podcast platform – aiming to educate and preserve this beautiful dialect by encouraging more people to engage and converse in Chavacano. Also hoping that it could be a helpful online reference in the future.
Don’t forget to follow Chavacano 101 with Busyqueenphils on Spotify so you will be updated of weekly episodes.
A vocabulary guide will also be posted in this blog for easy reference.
For comments, suggestions, guestings and vocabulary contribution, please feel free to send an email or message me on any of my social media platforms.
